Benjamin Lloyd Berry Jr was born March 29, 1864 in Philadelphia
and died Feb. 20, 1961 in Philadelphia.
On 5 August 1908, he wed Anna Frances Firth, a daughter of James C.Firth. Born April 13, 1867, she died a year or two after the marriage.
OCCUPATION: A graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology, he worked as a draftsman in Washington 1883-87. He was an inspector 1910 to 1917. By the 1920's his position was managing engineer in the Philadelphia Department of Wharves, Decks and Ferries.
RESIDENCES: He lived at 2008 N 12 St with his brother Horace, born in 1868. After Benjamin's first wife Frances died within a year or so of their 1908 marriage, he and Horace resided with Benjamin's father-in-law,. James C Firth, at 2042 N 11 St.
He and second wife Bertha Sauermilche bought the house at 7345 Walnut Lane on 14 March, 1929. (Bertha may have been the real owner.) Bertha died June 8, 1957, and left it to Benjamin, who sold it Dec 5 1958, and finally dwelled with his nephew Harry Apel Jr. and Harry's wife, Georgiana.
SECOND WIFE: Bertha Sauermilche was about 20 years younger than Benjamin. Reportedly, she was an heiress of the Freihoffer Bread Co. ownership.
MASTER MASON: Benjamin entered the Grand Lodge of the Most Ancient and Honorable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania in 1898. He rose to Fellow and Master Mason the next year, became senior warden in 1906, and Worshipful Master in 1907.
